Audio choices are obviously very personal, so I hesitate to recommend anything too strongly here. Tastes and tolerances differ so greatly, and wireless audio products really seem to push those differences. Maybe some of my needs and wants will match yours, maybe not, but please consider my thoughts here in light of the many personal qualifiers that I add. The Sennheiser HD 650 open-air dynamic headphone is a music lover’s dream, they are easy to wear and downright intoxicating to listen to. Sennheiser is, hands-down, the number-one name in high-quality headphones, and for good reason. Ever since Sennheiser issued its legendary HD 580 headphone in the mid ’90s, the German company has cornered the market on ultimate over-ear sound combined with ultimate comfort, makes for an unbeatable combination.

With no need to reinvent the wheel year in and year out, 2004’s titanium/silver-colored HD 650 is only the third top-of-the-line incarnation since the HD 580, following the classy HD 600 (and not counting Sennheiser’s made-to-order $15,000 Orpheus electrostatic headphone). Is each issue better than the last? Fundamentally, yes, though they’re also simply “different.” Taking as a starting point that each is truly excellent, the 580 might be said to focus on glorious midrange; the 600 makes a point of delivering extended, exceptionally airy high frequencies; and the 650, fittingly enough, tackles the most difficult area of sound for small drivers to handle: deep bass.

The Sennheiser HD 650 offers appreciable bass well below 40 Hz, the region responsible for the deepest frequencies generated by kick drums, timpani, double bass, electric bass guitar, and all manner of electronic sounds. Further, the 650 reproduces its low frequencies with only minimal emphasis in the upper-bass region, between the areas we commonly call “bass” and “midrange”, in which undue emphasis can destroy clarity both above and below.

If you listen mostly to classical, jazz, and acoustic music, you’ll probably embrace the headphone’s low-end authority without reservation. If you listen to contemporary pop/rock and electronica, however–genres subject to a fair amount of equalization and bass boosting over the course of recording, mixing, and mastering–then you might find yourself facing, at times, a bit too much bass. Of course, most rock demands excellent bass response, and the HD 650 delivers. It just isn’t forgiving of a musical production’s gross errors of judgment, which would makes it a great asset for sound engineers.

The 650’s driver material is a specially fabricated “acoustic silk” that minimizes harmonic and intermodulation distortion while maintaining a natural timbre. These drivers start and stop on a dime, ensuring dynamic transient “snap” while minimizing subtle, unwanted resonances that a given sound can induce.

Its broad frequency response is rated at 16 to 30,000 Hz, -3 dB (that is: the point at which the frequency extremes are reproduced 3 dB quieter than the frequencies in between), and 10 to 39,500 Hz, -10 dB. This makes the headphone a brilliant way to fully appreciating high-resolution audio formats like SACD, DVD-Audio, and LP records. Comparatively lower-res compact discs also sound fabulous. For best results, listen through a high-quality headphone amplifier, such as a dedicated headphone amp or the headphone jack in a high-quality preamplifier, integrated amplifier, or surround receiver.

The 650 performs remarkably well with portable audio devices (your iPod will likely never have sounded better), but keep in mind that a) you’ll need to crank the volume (sucking battery power), b) the 650 will probably make you uncomfortably aware of how amazingly far MP3s are from CD quality, especially below 160 kbps, and c) the open-air nature of the drivers means they block no outside noise whatsoever and broadcast their high frequencies to anyone within earshot.

The headphone’s detachable, Kevlar-reinforced OFC copper cable is over 9 feet long. While unquestionably durable and free from motion noise over most of its length–that is, noises audible in the ear cups when the cable is moved or touched–we noticed that the top foot or so (where it meets the earcups) is far more susceptible to motion noise than, say, any part of the cord for the HD 600. It’s not an issue when one is either motionless or rocking out.

A nice touch for nighttime use and for blind listeners is a trio of small bumps above the left earcup to assist in orienting the headset. Other features include hand-selected, matched transducers with tight (+/1 dB) tolerances, computer-optimized and highly efficient Neodymium ferrous magnet systems, extremely lightweight aluminum voice coils, and a gold-plated .25-inch jack plug with a separate adapter lead for connecting to minijack .125-inch plugs.

As to comfort, the 650’s elliptical ear cups use thick felt pads which circle the ears completely. It’s perfect for extended listening, putting no pressure on the ears themselves and fitting snugly across the head. The 650 is the tightest of the three models, an asset for those who want to listen while upright and moving about.

So headphone.com calls them “simply the world’s best headphone.” I can’t speak for the Grado or AKG contenders. I can say that they’re better than my Sennheiser 590’s, and that is shocking.

Which leads me to my first (and probably most important) point about this headphone. They cost a lot. A whole lot. Sennheiser has many units, including the 580, 590, 595, 600, and 650 (among many others), which could be construed as ‘reference’ quality. You’ll spend about half as much on one of the 5xx models as you will on the 650. So if you were to ask me whether the 650 is *twice as good* (that is to say, it costs more in proportion to its increased capability), I’ll tell you no, probably not. I might just not buy them, given the decision again. Perhaps if the price came down a bit.

And when it comes to the naked technical facts, the HD 800 doesn’t save on superlatives: The 56-mm-wide transducer is the largest of its type. The same goes for the aluminum coil (40 mm) and the 42-mm magnet system.

Cords and Connections:

The symmetrical cords are designed with twin-core, high-performance, Teflon-insulated connections on each side. They are additionally covered with high-quality material for better shielding from oscillations caused by ambient noise. The jacks are exclusively produced for the HD 800 in Switzerland and feature gold-plated bunches. Gold has the highly positive property of having a very low transfer resistance, thus guaranteeing excellent contact without interference.

Headband and Mountings:

The headband consists of a sandwich design in which a metal layer is covered with several layers of plastic. The high-tech plastic possesses incredible attenuation characteristics and ensures that oscillations are not transmitted to the headphone mountings.

The headphones of the HD 800 are only mounted on one side, to make sure they fit optimally over the ear. The relocation of their point of balance towards the back of the head also enhances comfort for the wearer.

A special kind of Japanese Alcantara has been selected for the ear pads. This material is extremely comfortable to wear and easy to maintain. Leona, an ultra-light, high-rigidity special plastic, is as hard as titanium and thus yielding extremely low oscillation. The Pros:

• The only negative thing i can say about the Sennheiser HD800’s is the price. $1400 can be a lot of money to shell out for headphones but you will find no better headphones on the market.

CONCLUSIONS:

The best high fidelity is of the utmost importance. I highly recommend these headphones to anyone who wants to listen to music the way it originally sounded in the studio and can afford the price tag because i can promise that you will hear sounds that you have never heard before and in some cases you might hear things that the studio engineers never intended to be recorded but didn’t pick up on their own equipment. One more thing anyone considering these headphones should know; it is critical to have a great headphone amp if you are going to get the best out of this product.

Sound Quality:
The sound quality is incredible , but it is not the best you can get. You will also notice a lower sound quality while “off”. This is probably because when you turn on the noise canceling, this also turns on an amp too. Most of your MP3 players and ipods will not sound good with the Sennheiser PXC 350’s unless you turn on the noise canceling feature.

Noise Canceling:
The Sennheiser PXC 350 Headphones are great at blocking out outside noises even with the noise canceling turned off. This is a Comfortable, quality product.

It is hard to be disappointed by the Sennheiser PXC 300 headphones. You hear music like a professional does with tremendous detail, clarity and across the whole sound spectrum. Bass is precise and effortlessly well defined, mid range is rich and treble is crystal clear. These are easily the Porsche of headphones. Noise cancelling:
As far as noise cancelling goes, these headphones are not the best, but they do the job. They cancel out close to 80 percent of the noise, which is a tremendous help. If you are getting these to listen to music and sound quality is important, then I would recommend these wholeheartedly.

For sound quality i was really impressed with these headphones. The sound is crystal clear, with the bass being strong but not too overwhelming.

I’ve been in the market for a good pair of noise cancelling headphones for a while, and after trying out a pair of Bose noise cancelling headphones, decided not to buy them, mostly because of the outrageous price. I wanted to try out a pair of Sennheiser’s but couldn’t find a store that would sell them so based on the excellent reviews, I put them on my X-mas list. My dh bought them on Amazon for a very good price for me. Also, someone else accidently bought me a pair of Sony Noise Cancelling headphones for Christmas, so I got to try those out too. Well, my final verdict is that the Sennheiser’s are the best noise cancelling headphones out of the three. They have some drawbacks, but I think the sound quality more than makes up for those. Here’s how they stack up.

The Basics:

The Sennheiser PXC 250 Active Noise Canceling Headphones are constructed of solid metal/plastic components, comfortable vinyl padding, folds up into a somewhat small and flat profile, and fits great in the high quality padded case that comes with the headphones. The noise canceling circuitry is contained in a separate, it is not bulky at all to handle especially with the belt clip. The power switch is pushed up/down and you won’t have to worry about accidentally pressing the switch. It is powered by 2 AAA batteries (documentation doesn’t state how long the power would last with continuous use) and will conveniently continue to function even when the batteries drain (albeit without the noise cancelation). These headphones are not silver colors as stated and shown in the product title and picture, they are black and metal gray. The standard two year warranty is definitely an advantage over other headphone manufacturer offerings.

Audio Quality:

With the noise canceling circuitry turned off the audio sounds shallow and tiny because the padding causes the headphones to sit a little far from the eardrums. If you push in the headphones against your ears you will notice that the audio quality and bass response improves. When the circuitry is turned on the tinnyness disappars, but the audio seems over-boosted particularly the bass. The mid and high range is far more accurately produced. For the size, design and intended purpose these headphones have decent audio quality.

Noise Cancellation:

When the noise cancellation is turned on, it does a real good job of blocking out all outside noises as well as other low-pitched noise but the circuitry produces a higher pitched hissing in return (comparable to an audio cassette tape without Dolby Noise Reduction technology). This could be the effect of one noise canceling out the other, thankfully it is not that noticeable when listening to music at moderate levels. Don’t expect the Sennheiser PXC 250’s to isolate you from loud people in the same room or screaming kids, you will still be able to hear outside conversation especially people that have high pitched voices.

The Pros:

• Very comfortable, light on the ears and top of the head. They don’t pinch like a lot of others, or get hot

previously had the AKG 701 headphones as my main headphones. The problem with those is that after several hours they would really hurt my head. They did sound very, very good though. I never realized how much they lacked in the bass department until I put on some old Sennheiser HD-555’s.

I “upgraded” to these expecting them to sound about the same or slightly better than my AKG 701s. The difference is HUGE. These sound much, much better. The first week i’ve been listening to music much more often because these make it sound so much better.

I was recently in the market for a new set of headphones and my audition process was lengthy and borderline obsessive. The result was a pretty good picture of what’s out there for a reasonable ($600 or less) price. After listening to Sennheisers, Grados, AKGs, Etymotics, and Beyer, I came to the conclusion that the Beyer DT770s are nearly perfect for recording, monitoring, and mixing. I didn’t get a chance to demo the DT880s, which some people rank amongst the very finest transducers in the world, but I’m sure they’re even better.

• Acoustics: The Tonal clarity and imaging are simply amazing. You do need some power to dirve the transducers but not a whole lot.

Although I prefer the AKG K701 for most of my listening, this competing entry from Beyer is so close that it’s almost a coin toss. (One recent comparison in a headphone artcle came up with a dead heat.)

This is surprising, considering that the DT880 is one of the most reasonably priced of the major mid-priced headphones. The bass is full but nicely textured – not a touch of bass bloat to be found here. The highs are detaied and never seemed sharp to me, and the overall sound offers a huge soundstage. Instead of the music being on top of your, these Beyers lend a perceived distance of a few feet; ths makes classical music sound doubly elegant, and surprisingly makes rock music grandiose in an appealing kind of way.
